Chris Pfeiffer on Top of the World

More than a hundred metres above the streets of Munich, Chris Pfeiffer recently completed one of his most ambitious rides to date.

On the roof of BMW’s ‘four-cylinder’ building in Munich, the stunt-riding superstar was the focal point of a breathtaking video project timed to celebrate the launch of the awesome new F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer Edition roadster.

Named the 'F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer', it closely resembles his stunt machine with its BMW Motorsports paint scheme.

The basic technical characteristics remain unchanged from the standard F 800 R model, but special features include Akrapovic rear silencer; BMW Motorsport colours; painted pillion passenger seat cover; Chris Pfeiffer signature on the central cover; front wheel finished in white; a set of sponsor stickers; on-board computer; LED direction indicators; rear suspension spring finished in red; and heated grips.

With its low seat, excellent ergonomics and torquey 87 hp engine, it’s easy to see why the multiple stunt riding world champion chose the F 800 R to take on – and beat – all challengers to his crown.

And although we don’t recommend owners to attempt the same gravity-defying tricks as Chris, we can confirm that the F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer Edition is one of the easiest, fun and most rewarding motorcycles to ride, as well as one of the best looking naked roadsters out there.

Usually, Pfeiffer is more accustomed to performing his awesome array of tricks at ground level, whether it’s at two and four-wheel motorsport events, in exhibition halls or in front of packed grandstands at motorcycle shows.

But when BMW Motorrad bosses suggested he took the controls of his F 800 R 19 storeys above ground on top of the firm’s headquarters in downtown Munich, it was an opportunity Chris couldn’t resist.

“It was one of the coolest things I’ve done in a long time,” he said.
“The location was awesome and I literally jumped at the chance to ride over Munich! The views were fantastic and I got a great look at the Olympic stadium from the top of the building. It was a special experience.”

The footage – shot on July 14 – will also form the basis of one of several videos that will be available on BMW TV, the German manufacturers’ online video portal, formally known as Web TV.

To ensure the re-launch of the service made an impact, BMW was able to take advantage of the publicity surrounding the launch of the F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer Edition, and Pfeiffer’s unique talents were an obvious choice of subject matter.

“The timing of the project couldn’t have been better,” reveals Chris.

“I had been searching for a rooftop location for a while and when I mentioned this in one of my meetings with BMW in Munich, one of the guys just said ‘hey, what about the rooftop here’ and it sounded perfect. The idea was passed around the management and, as most of the members of the board had heard of what I do with BMW, they were entirely confident in my ability and gave the project the green light!”

Indeed, far from being sceptical of Pfeiffer and the production team’s plans, BMW Motorrad management witnessed first-hand (and relished) the display of ultimate bike control that Chris produced during the shoot.

“While we were filming, there was a meeting involving top BMW management in one of the rooms a few floors beneath us. They must have heard the bike as, one by one, they came up to the roof to see what was going on. They were a little surprised to see exactly what I was doing but seemed to enjoy the spectacle.”

Since the idea of performing stunts on motorcycles was conceived, Pfeiffer has been at the forefront of innovation in the sport. Yet despite his obvious talent, riding on a rooftop, in a confined space and on an unfamiliar surface was a new experience for him.

Nevertheless, and perhaps unsurprisingly, he overcame the difficulties to perform a flawless routine.

“The riding wasn’t actually that different from riding on tarmac,” he says modestly.

“When we were making the plans, I was a little concerned that the surface might be too difficult to ride on, but when we did the location check I was amazed – the surface was excellent and all that we needed to do was to brush it off.

The only difficult aspect of the shoot was that the area that I was riding in was pretty small. I also performed a jump on top of a one metre-high wall.

Normally, I would be able to perform that trick without thinking about it, but being more than 100 metres high on top of a building in the middle of Munich, I really had to concentrate. The square beneath the building had been closed off, which was reassuring!”

Even the daunting view of Munich from above didn’t deter Pfeiffer, but the same couldn’t be said of the film crew.

“I wasn’t worried in the slightest about being so high up as heights don’t scare me,” he reveals.

“I was a free climber in my youth, so I’m used to big heights, but a few members of the crew were a little scared – especially when I started doing wheelie circles!”

Having achieved everything there is to achieve in the world of stunt riding, the BMW rooftop project represents a new avenue for Pfeiffer’s career.

Although the 39-year-old doesn’t have any immediate plans for retiring from competitive riding, he feels that adding another dimension to his riding is a natural progression and that riding in extraordinary places could represent his future.

“One of my main motivations in stunt riding is finding fantastic locations, like the roof of the BMW building, where I can perform,” he says.

“I’ve got nothing planned for the next two or three months in terms of extreme locations, but even if I had, I wouldn’t want to give any clues! I’ve got a list of places where I’d like to ride, but they’re not all dangerous places.

For me, the beauty of the location is just as important.”

Pfeiffer’s rooftop ride reaffirms stunt riding’s position as a sport that has emerged from the shadows to become one of the most sought-after spectacles in motorsport. When Pfeiffer’s career began in 1996, stunt riders were confined to car parks and wasteland.

But now, 14 years later, one of the world’s most prestigious companies is using stunt riding and its most recognisable ambassador to promote itself to the world – a sentiment that isn’t lost on Pfeiffer:

“For me it represents a shift in attitude towards stunt riding,” he concludes.

“You only have to go back a few years and stunt riding was an ‘underground’ pursuit. But now it’s literally over ground and I’m being invited to perform at high-profile events throughout the world, which is great for the sport. It opens up a whole new world of opportunity.”
